Winchester University's senior lecturer Lim Teoh has emerged Public Sector Lecturer of the Year at the 2024 PQ Magazine Awards.

The award ceremony took place on April 22 at Lio London, in the West End.

Mr Teoh expressed his appreciation to Dr Julia Osgerby for his nomination and to Sarah Moore-Williams, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Digital Technologies and Director of the University of Winchester Business School, for her support.

Well-known in academic circles for his innovative teaching methods, he was previously awarded the National Teaching Fellowship in 2022. Specialising in taxation, Teoh was recognised for utilising digital technology creatively.

Notably, Mr Teoh designed a mobile app that simulates a café environment where students play waiting staff. By answering questions correctly, students can replenish the café's food stock, serve customers, and earn reward points.

Mr Teoh said: "This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of my colleagues at the University of Winchester particularly in the Department of Economics, Accounting and Finance.

"To my students, thank you for your participation and engagement in class. Your commitment to learning inspires me every day!"

PQ editor Graham Hambly said: "Lim is an absolutely fantastic tutor. He’s a team leader, offers real guidance to his students, and throws in some innovative game-based learning too. He wants learning to be fun and engaging, and what is not to like about that!"

Dean of Winchester Business School, Sarah Moore-Williams, who is a chartered certified accountant, said: "Congratulations to Lim on this richly-deserved award. It is a testament to Lim’s innovative and imaginative approach to teaching and his willingness to embrace new technology and adapt it to the needs of his subject and his students.

"These nominations highlight the excellence of our teaching in Accounting Finance and the imagination and dedication of our staff. Accounting and Finance is key part of any business, and the University is proud of its record in preparing highly confident and competent graduates to enter this sector."

Dr Sabine Bohnacker-Bruce, head of department for Economics, Accounting and Finance, said: "Following on from our excellent NSS scores, this is testimony that we are delivering high-quality teaching which prepares our students for the world of work."
