A HAMPSHIRE factory was closed and 25 workers evacuated when fire broke out in a heating unit last night.

Teams of fire fighters from Eastleigh were called to the Prysmian Cable factory in Bishopstoke, amid reports smoke was coming from the large mechanism in the roof.

They used heat detectors and thermal imagery as they battled to locate the source of the blaze, which started close to 9pm yesterday.

Eastleigh watch manager Anton Phillips said: “We were there quite quickly and stopped what could have been a major incident. The potential for the fire to get big was very high.

“Damage was confined to the heater but there was smoke throughout the building.”

Watch manager Phillips added that the Chickenhall Lane-based factory was set to reopen today.
