ROMSEY'S mayor has officially opened Woodley Pre-School's new garden - a project he helped fund.

Children at the Cupernham Infant School-based pre-school have been learning about caring for the environment and plant growth and the garden is part of the project. With the help of staff member Selina Edwards pre-school children have planted potatoes, onions, an apple tree and a blackcurrant bush. And runner beans and tomatoes will be planted in the near future.

Mayor Mark Cooper opened the garden during the pre-school's annual wheelathon on Saturday. Mr Cooper used some of his annual member's grant for community projects to help towards the cost of setting the garden up.

"We have been very lucky to have Mr Cooper's support along with a donations from Green Side Up, Homebase, Great Woodley Hardware and the children's parents and grandparents. Perhaps this venture will see Romsey producing lots of future Charlie Dimmocks," said Selina.

Some of the new scooters ridden by children taking part in the Wheelathon were funding through a donation from Romsey Carnival Committee.
