The magnificent cake

Matthew Bourne's new adaptation of Nutcracker!, currently showing at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre, was a veritable feast on the eye.

Mr Bourne has a reputation for youth, vigour and innovation, which was further enhanced by last nights performance.

Traditionally a festive ballet, along with Tchaikovsky's spine tingling score, this adaptation of Nutcracker! follows Clara's bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross' Orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

The first half consisted of youthful exuberance, contrasted skilfully by the grey tones of the orphanage and drab, simple dress of the orphans.

The storyline was faithful to the Nutcracker! legend, with the innovative addition of the colourful, and amusing, sweets and an impressive cake which, when revealed, sent gasps around the capacity crowd.

When the second half burst onto the extremely enthusiastic and young audience, the deliberate contrast between the darkness of the orphanage and the splendour of the Sweetieland had the desired effect.

The corps de ballet offered faultless support and portrayed the tale of first love and overcoming adversity with real passion and a sense of humour.

The dancers looked so vibrant, energy as well as colour-wise, and during the whole show there was not a ballet pump or tutu in site.

Sadly there wasn't a live orchestra and at times the sound levels seemed out of sympathy with the action on stage, but that said this was a spectacular and thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Tuesday evening.

Nutcracker! is showing at the Mayflower until Saturday May 17.
