Have a say on county pay
HAMPSHIRE'S residents are to be given their say on how much county councillors' are paid. Members of Hampshire's Independent Remuneration Panel is behind the comprehensive review of all councillors allowances and it's the first in depth examination of pay since 2000 prior to the restructuring of the authority's decision-making bodies.
The three-member panel will compare how county councillors are paid with others in similar jobs in local government and public authorities and the private sector and it will also look at the hours they work and the levels of responsibility they have.
Each councillor is currently entitled to £11,565 a year in allowances and members doing extra work get a special responsibility allowance.
Panel chairman Peter Humpreys said: "This is an important review. It comes at a time when there is concern at the health of local democracy and we will be looking closely at all issues."
Averts are being put in newspapers across Hampshire this week inviting the public to comment and a public hearing has been fixed for June 26.
