A PUPIL threatened a boy with a knife inside a Hampshire secondary school.

The Daily Echo understands the victim was held and threatened with a Stanley knife placed at his throat at The Mountbatten School in Romsey.

Police say no arrests have been made, but they are investigating.

The terrifying incident comes a week after a teenager was injured in a knifing at Oasis Academy Mayfield in Southampton.

A distraught Mountbatten parent said that the boy who allegedly threatened the victim has been suspended for five days.

The parent, who posted concerns on Facebook, says a complaint about the incident has been written to the school in Whitenap Lane, following the incident on Wednesday.

However she declined to talk to the Daily Echo last night.

The school has confirmed that there was an incident, but they have not clarified whether a knife was involved and what punishment and exact actions have been taken.

A statement from associate head teacher Christopher Cox said: “I can confirm there was an incident in school involving two of our students. However, this was managed in strict accordance with school policy and with the support of the police.

“A proportionate initial sanction has been imposed by the school. Police enquiries are continuing. I have no further comment to make.”

Romsey town councillor Nicky Bailey said she was “shocked” when told about the incident.

Cllr Bailey said: “I think as a councillor, every councillor and everybody would be aghast about it.

“I thought there would be knife checks in place, given what has happened in Yorkshire with that Spanish teacher that was stabbed.

“But unless you have measures like they do at airports you cannot stop a knife from coming in.

“One would presume that they would come down quite seriously on the young man; it could go even further if the police are involved. I am surprised because Romsey is not known for this sort of behaviour at all, certainly not in the school which has a good reputation.

“I am sure the school, the parents and police will have meetings to sort out the underlying issues.”

Test Valley Borough councillor for Romsey Abbey, Ian Richards, a former police officer, said he hopes it is an isolated incident and called for calm.

Cllr Richards said: “Both of our schools are excellent, I do not think this was anything other than an isolated incident. I think we have an excellent record with our local schools.

“I used to be a policeman and I do recall instances of youths hanging around the school gates, which is not the norm these days.

“But as far as I have seen both schools are well run. You would not expect this to happen as a measure of routine.

“I would not encourage parents to feel they have to go in their cars to the school to pick up their children, I would caution parents not to overreact to what appears to be an isolated incident.”

The school, which has around 1,400 pupils, was rated 'Good' in its last Ofsted Report in 2015.

Inspectors say that the academy’s work to keep students safe and secure is good.

A statement from Hampshire Constabulary said: “We have received a report of a non-injury assault involving a boy at The Mountbatten School, in Whitenap Lane, Romsey, which took place on Wednesday, March 8.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of what happened. No arrests have been made in relation to this investigation at this time.”
