When Leigh Norton decided the time was right to step onto the property ladder, he was pleasantly surprised with how much he could get for his money at Taylor Wimpey’s sought-after Compass Point development in Southampton, Hampshire.

As a first-time buyer purchasing a new apartment on his own, Leigh feared he may not be able to afford the move. But when Taylor Wimpey introduced him to the Help to Buy initiative, he secured a great new apartment at this in-demand development.

Help to Buy enables eligible purchasers to secure a Government loan for 20% of their new home’s full price – meaning Leigh only required a 75% loan-to-value mortgage and a 5% deposit.

“I moved from the other side of Hampshire, towards Guildford, and I was initially looking for apartments in the Farnborough area.” Says Leigh (27). “However, they were all around the £210,000 to £220,000 mark, and it just wasn’t feasible for just one person. Finding this development was perfect, as apartments are much better value and I was able to secure one with just a 5% deposit thanks to Help to Buy.

“At first it all seemed a confusing prospect. However, once I spoke to someone at Taylor Wimpey, it all fell together perfectly.

“Everything about Taylor Wimpey was so welcoming, and I was given all the information I needed – the entire process was so smooth and easy.”

Leigh’s apartment boasts a dual-aspect open-plan kitchen/dining/living room, a master bedroom, a further bedroom and a main bathroom, while there’s allocated parking outside.

He adds: “What I love most about the home is that there is an enormous oak tree that overlooks the property that just looks fantastic. I also love the fact I get my own parking space – with commuting to work daily and using my car all the time, it was essential, and it’s great not to have to pay an extortionate fee on permits.

“I was shown the measurements of the apartment, but I really couldn’t comprehend it until I was in it – and I was really impressed. It’s an incredible location really – everything is only a five-minute drive away, so with plenty to do and see, it’s ideal.”

There is a range of homes on sale now at Compass Point, including one-bedroom apartments priced from as little as £132,000, two-bedroom designs from £158,000 and four-bedroom houses from just £258,000.

Help to Buy is available to first-time buyers and those with a property to sell on new-build properties up to the value of £600,000. There is no salary cap for homebuyers taking advantage of the scheme.

Compass Point enjoys a convenient location in the established residential community of Maybush, just three miles from the centre of Southampton and only a short hop from the rural splendour of the New Forest.

There’s a choice of local supermarkets right on the doorstep while the West Quay Shopping Centre offers a wide selection of big name stores in the heart of the city.

Parents will appreciate the range of schools for children of all ages close by, including nursery and primary schools within walking distance and secondary schools, including Regents Park Community College, less than a mile from home.
