Aliens invading the New Forest will be the subject a talk to given in Romsey in October.

Catherine Chatters, of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, will be giving an illustrated talk entitled "The New Forest Non-Native Plants Project".

Catherine, who is the trust’s non-native plants officer, will explain the problems caused by invasive foreign flora and go on to describe the work being undertaken to stop their spread, particularly along watercourses and in wetland habitats.

Himalayan Balsam, for example, which was introduced by the Victorians, is spreading rapidly along river banks in the Forest, threatening our native wildlife. Its pretty pink flowers might appear harmless but its seed pods "explode" when ripe and the young balsam plants thrive in the damp areas near water.

The talk, organised by the trust Romsey group will be held in the Crosfield Hall at 7.30pm on October 20. Admission is £3. Non-members are welcome. Further information about the HIWWT and the Romsey Group is available from Janet Levitton on 01794 519262.
