Theatre Royal Winchester’s season of dance continues on Tuesday, March 7 with the annual visit of Mapdance, the University of Chichester’s long established MA touring company.

Each year a group of dynamic young dancers are recruited nationally and internationally for the tour. This year dance lovers can enjoy energetic, skilled performances of a varied set of new work by renowned and upcoming choreographers.

Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Janis Joplin are analysed and their moves sampled in 4 Pop Portraits by Lea Anderson MBE, artistic director of The Cholmondleys and Featherstonehaughs.

The emotional states of people sketched by Egon Schiele inspire Shobana Jeyasingh’s Dance Beneath. Jeyasingh has been creating extraordinary dance for 27 years.

Hagit Yakira’s unique poetic style can be seen in About Touch which explores the idea that what we become is determined by what we touch. Finally Cai Tomos’ Wild is like one long dancing howl to the moon.

It’s a diverse repertoire that mixes gritty dance-theatre, intricate lyrical choreography, fast-paced athleticism and wry humour – a treat for anyone who loves modern dance.

Mapdance performs at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday, March 7 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk and on 01962 840 440.
