Don’t mind art? It’s for you

THE Art and Mind Festival returns to Winchester with events taking place between late June and early July.

Before that, the festival will open with a presentation of Jean Cocteau’s film, Orphée, at The Screen cinema, on Wednesday, June 24.

After that, there will be a series of events entitled “We are such stuff as dreams are made of”, at the Discovery Centre.

They will take place on June 26, 27 and 28.

In session one, the keynote speaker, anthropologist, Dr Iain Edgar, will take an overview of dreams in culture worldwide.

He is followed by a look at how dream images are used in popular song with a set from the Zoë Schwarz and Rob Koral Jazz and Blues Quartet.

Session two has Rita Carter, the science writer and author of Mapping the Mind, looking at the experience of lucid dreaming.

She is followed by Garry Kennard, pictured, who develops these ideas with thoughts on how dreaming is related to the waking experience of art.

Session three has psychologist, Dr Mary Twyman, examining dreams in theatre and literature with special reference to Shakespeare. The event will end with a run through The Wheel of Consciousness with science writer, Jeff Warren.

In the final session, Dr John Smalley will talk about the appreciation of dreams.

Paul Cheneour and Khaled Hakim will follow him and will focus on Sufi and contemporary spiritual music.

Also on June 28, there will be a session for five to eights, entitled Alan in Wonderland.

From July 4 to 26, Andrew Carnie will be showing his new installation, Seized: Out of this World, exploring dream-like states at the Discovery Centre.

The artist will give a talk at 7.30pm on Friday, July 10.

Perhaps the crowning glory will be the first UK performance of Sir John Tavener’s new work, Towards Silence, in Winchester Cathedral on Monday, July 6.

It will feature the Medici String Quartet, re-formed for this event.
