THE programme has been unveiled for this year’s Winchester Film Festival.

Founded in 2009, the event is now in its fourth year and aims to screen movies in new and unusual locations.

It will start on Tuesday, May 8 with Mel Brooks’ horror comedy Young Frankenstein at the Great Hall in Winchester.

Two days later Junior Bonner will be shown at Sparsholt College Equine Centre, starring Steve McQueen in the lead role as a rodeo rider.

Then on Friday, May 11, the action switches to Alresford Station and the historic Watercress Line. It will host a screening of the classic love story, Brief Encounter.

Organisers will then continue the theme of matching venues to the movies with the legal drama, Twelve Angry Men.

It will be shown at Winchester Combined Courts Centre on Saturday, May 12 The next venue will be even more inventive, pressing a former London bus run by Boogie Bus Travel into service.

The vehicle will collect people from The Broadway in Winchester and take them for a spin and show them a film.

And the movie in question will be Speed, the action thriller about a commuter bus booby-trapped by a ruthless bomber.

The thrills continue on Monday, May 14. Having hosted a special ‘Zombosium’ lecture series, the University of Winchester will now host a Zombiethon.

A 12-hour collection of films about the undead will be screened in the union building’s aptly named Vault from 8pm on Monday, May 14.

Then on Wednesday, May 16, the Army Cadet Force HQ in Winchester will host Joyeux Noel. The film focuses on the Christmas ceasefire in the trenches during World War I.

The unusual venues continue on Friday, May 18, with the BAM Nuttall depot in Allbrook Hill, Allbrook hosting a screening of Hush. The drama focuses on a motorway trip that takes a turn for the sinister.

Then on Saturday, May 19, the cult classic film The Swimmer will be shown at River Park Leisure Centre in Winchester.

The programme concludes with Performance which brings together a London gangster and faded musician. It will be shown at the Railway Inn, St Paul’s Hill, which hosts several live bands each week.
