Big names fall foul of council’s food police

ROMSEY'S two biggest supermarkets and Esso's re-vamped state-of-the-art filling station and café are among food establishments to have fallen foul of new food safety and hygiene inspections.

The vast majority of premises in the Southern Test Valley have been classed as "satisfactory", with 10 rated "unsatisfactory" and eight "excellent".

The rankings, shown on the Safe2eat website, reveal shortcomings found at the Waitrose and Aldi supermarkets and the Esso On the Run café at Greatbridge when they were inspected late last year.

All three were asked to carry out improvements on certain procedures, although the details of the Waitrose inspection have not yet been released by the council.

But the company was quick to tell the Advertiser that it had taken immediate action and, on Wednesday, the store was rated excellent after a re-inspection.

A spokesman said: "We immediately corrected the fault with the monitoring system which maintains the correct temperature for our refrigeration units and caused us to receive this rating.

"We pride ourselves on our food hygiene standards and we are awaiting confirmation of when they will be able to carry out a reassessment, having already invited them back."

At Aldi, the council's inspector found some of the food in the chill display units was above the legal maximum temperature and also called for an additional handwash basin in either the storage or waste-sorting area.

An Aldi spokesman said: "To date, Aldi's Romsey store has normally received excellent ratings for hygiene from the relevant environmental health body.

"This is the first time we've been rated under the Test Valley Borough Council's new Safe2eat scheme and we were surprised by its conclusion. As a result, we are officially raising our concerns with the Test Valley Borough Council and will be awaiting a response."

Rolls in the refrigerated display island at Greatbridge On the Run also failed to pass muster. The inspectors' letter to the proprietor stated: "These foods are likely to support the growth of food-poisoning bacteria or the formation of toxins and must not be stored at above 8oC. If the refrigerator is not able to hold high risk foods, it must be replaced."

It also referred to "gaps in records, insufficient cleaning in the food preparation areas, inability to produce adequate monitoring and recording of cleaning and an overflowing refuse area with open food waste".

Esso said in a statement: "We take our responsibilities for food safety very seriously. We follow the guidelines as laid down by the Food Standards Agency. We were disappointed with the Local Authority Food Inspector's report of December last year and are seeking a meeting with him to discuss them matter.

Esso added that they had management changes and that staff have undergone re-training in food service. Engineers have attended the site and reviewed air flows and temperature holding equipment.

Test Valley Borough Council said in a statement: "If a food business is found to be unsatisfactory, it means that changes in food management are needed and this could involve staff training, changes in procedure or even new equipment.

"If improvements are necessary, then regular inspections will follow to ensure that all appropriate work has been carried out and high standards are being maintained."

"The Safe2eat initiative has been introduced to provide the public with information about the hygiene standards of food businesses so that they can make informed choices and be confident that food safety is top priority."
