Teenagers rescue injured pensioner
THREE teenage boys who attend schools in Romsey are being hailed as heroes after going to the rescue of an 89-year-old woman who had been lying injured in the rain in her garden for three hours.
Jordan Dovey, 14, and Oscar Cryan, 13, who both attend the Romsey School, and Sam Bowles, 13, who is at Mountbatten School, were out for a bike ride in the Cowesfield area, near Sherfield English, when they did all the right things in a real-life emergency.
Sam had ridden ahead of his two pals and when he stopped outside the hedge of a secluded garden to wait for them, he heard faint cries for help coming from the garden.
When the three went to investigate, they found the woman, who is not being named, lying on the ground, soaking wet and with a gaping wound - caused by an accidental fall - on her right hand, which had been bleeding quite badly.
They helped her to her feet and took her indoors, with Jordan using his mobile phone to dial 999.
They raised the alarm shortly after 4pm and no-one knows exactly how long the woman had been injured, but her garden is in a quiet area and her cries were not heard.
"She had a really nasty cut on her arm and they wrapped a towel around it while they waited for the ambulance," said Jordan's mum, Amanda Dovey.
"Oscar had just recovered from a nasty cut on his arm, so he knew what to do and told her to hold her arm up to stem the bleeding."
The boys had been so caring and comforting that the woman asked if Oscar could go with her in the ambulance. He accompanied her to Salisbury District Hospital, with his mother following by car.
The injured woman was treated and detained and had plastic surgery on Wednesday.
As her recovery continued, her daughter, Sandra Rossiter, described the boys as "heroes". She had been contacted and told about the accident by Mrs Dovey and had immediately dashed to hospital to be with her mother.
She said: "They did extremely well and her parents should be incredibly proud of them. Both my mother and I are very, very grateful for everything they did.
"She had been there for some time and it could have been such a different story if these boys hadn't found her. The gardens in the area are quite big and it is not often that there is anyone in earshot.
"When I visit my mother we go for walks and we see these boys out on their bikes. Now I have been in touch with all their parents and told them how grateful we are."
Mrs Rossiter explained that her mother had been "pottering" in the garden when she fell and she tried to reach out and steady herself by grabbing a metal stake, which cut her hand.

It is so good to see this reported. We get so much negative comment about young people that it makes a change to hear that "unprovoked community spirit" does exist. Congratulations to the boys parents as well who have made such a good job of bringing up their children.

Agreed ! However on the other side of the coin what a pity The Advertiser does not follow up on some of the negative stories it prints so that we can at least hear the outcome. A youth was to appear in court last Friday charged with criminal damage to cars in Botley Road . Arrests were made in Woodley the week before. Follow up on these and indeed other incidents reported in the paper - zilch. If and when the police and the courts take action and punishments are issued to those who break the law could the Advertiser not blaze it across the front page so that potential lawbreakers get the message.
