Scouts dump half a century of junk in spring clear-out
THE big sort-out of more than half-a-century's worth of Scouting paraphernalia has been launched in Romsey.
With fund-raising for the Doctor Peter Project for a new energy-efficient headquarters for the 1st Romsey Scout Group and a base for other community groups, the Scouts have begun preparing their present headquarters for the start of the project.
The initial aim was to discover how much of the camping and other equipment and materials was worth saving and how much had to go, so they could work out what storage space they would need in the new building.
During the big Spring Clean, camping equipment which dated back to the 1950s was consigned to a skip, provided for the Group by BPK Ltd and a significant quantity of steel and aluminium was recovered for recycling.
Some items were retained for the historical archive, but more than 50 per cent was disposed of.
This year's aim is to continue with the fund-raising for the £200,000 project, finalise the planning details and appoint a builder to do the work.
The existing building has not been substantially updated since it was built in the early 1950s and as well as failing to meet modern access and efficiency standards, it needs ever-increasing maintenance work.
More than six Romsey community groups who are looking for modern, well-equipped meeting rooms, have shown an interest in using the new building and there has been a commitment from a pre-school which would use the large hall during the day.
Next major fund-raising event will be a sponsored walk by children in the group on May 10 and project leaders are hoping it will be well-supported by the people of Romsey.
In addition, the Group, which was founded in 1908, will be holding a centenary celebration barbecue on July 18 and it hoping that all ex-members and leaders will be keen to support it.
