Store boss fears long-term cost of Broadlands Tesco

Greg Davies of Bradbeers. Greg Davies of Bradbeers.

One of Romsey’s biggest retailers says it may pull out of the town if the proposed Tesco store brought with it a major reduction in footfall and customer spending in the town centre. “The long-term effects for Bradbeers, particularly if Tesco expand in later years, will put the store’s future in doubt,” says managing- director, Greg Davies.

To be honest if Bradbeers leave Romsey ...good....just because they cant have their own way its "toys out of the pram"

They have too much of a hold on Romsey, their leaving would alow enough space for "sensible" shops to come to Romsey, thus rejuvenating the heart of Romsey

Completley agree with the above comment!

Is this meant as a threat? I work for one of the towns many estate agents..We dont threaten to close each time another agent opens up shop!

And were exactley does Bradbears see them self going if they left the town??

Another shamfull stunt by the old **** who are trying to stop Romsey growing for the next generation!

Bradbeers is overpriced and overstaffed, if they go then good, I totally agree with the above comments, perhaps we can get a better choice to buy clothes rather than the expensive stuff that is there at the present.

If I need any kitchen equipment I go to the hardware shop - same products but cheaper. One thing I have noticed, with this so called 'threat' of Tescos the staff in the shops such as Bradbeers and Waitrose have become much more chatty and helpful!! Romsey needs to get it's head out of the sand and start opening more businesses that are useful to the town which at the moment attracts coach parties made up of mainly elderly people. Romsey is an aging town and if it's not careful it will become a ghost town.

This kleaves Caroline Nokes in an interesting position since she receives political donations from both Bradbeers and several developers. They can't both win.

How pathetic is this we have had to put up with Bradbeers (our town ) attitude and we are supposed to feel sorry for them are we they have spent years vetting and sticking their noses into new businesses just in case they may harm their profits and yet they are quite happy to sweep aside small businesses by opening new departments that would compete with theirs.
Tescos sell groceries and will not compete with them and yet they dont complain about aldis with there varied produce i think that Bradbeers greed has come to the surface at last

I'm sure Mr Davies will get a good competitive quote from Pickfords when he decides to relocate on his acres at Hedge End.

I'm sure that Pickfords will give Mr Davies a good competitive quote to move his goods to his Hedge End acres. :-p

Maybe Tescos could then buy the heart of Romsey from him, fixtures and fittings and all, along with the Aldi carpark, and Q.E.D.!

What petulant remarks from 'store boss' Mr Davies. He is hardly a Gordon Selfridge, a Jack Cohen,or,dare I say it,a Mohamed Fayed.
Let us hope that The Hundred acts as a barrier to Bradbeers gradual takeover of the centre of the town.

To be honest, Bradbeers was always going to come out with this kind of statement. Its what businesses do, so it shouldn't have been a surprise. I'm not totally against the Tesco development as long as its done in a way that is good for the area. But I doubt that will happen as it will cost money.

Have to say I have always found Waitrose/Bradbeers staff very friendly in the 10 years that I have lived in Romsey.

A predictable and seemingly petulant reflex from Bradbeers. It cites a risk to its commercial health but expects us to believe it will relocate to Hedge End straight into a head-on battle - with Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury and a range of better-value out of town retailers – which it will clearly lose. Not sure what its current concession holders will think of that master-plan and then there'll be the vacant asset in Romsey.... Perhaps we should find a way to call Bradbeers's bluff, let it leave the site and let, say, Tesco capitalise on it with it's grocery, white-goods, leisure, clothes and home-wares at affordable prices to close those survey gaps, the residents of Romsey have identified. Perhaps, then, the concessions can be encouraged to come back and invest in dedicated outlets, raising the profile of the Town centre.

The Bradbeers statement is puzzling. Right now, with concerns over reduced footfall, a more enlightened view would seem to be to create further reasons to pull shoppers into the Town. By completing its proposed expansion, Bradbeers should be doing just that. Tesco and Bradbeers are not like-for like competitors, so its lightly veiled threat simply serves as a self-fulfilling prophesy and sends me, at least, a worrying mixed message over its true commitment to the Town.

Take a look at the number of Bradbeers in the UK and you'll find 4 stores. Tesco has nearly 3,000 UK stores. So I am rather annoyed by
those who are criticising Bradbeers in the "Broadlands' Tesco" debate.
Bradbeers is a quality and traditional department store and we really NEED stores like this. I think Romsey and New Milton are very lucky to have them.
Tesco is just a common supermarket selling goods of dubious quality. Its ethic is greed and dominance - no wonder I guess when it's DNA was inherited from the infamous Dame Shirley Porter (the Tesco heiress). Tesco cares nothing about small companies the town of Romsey and will cause havoc on the bypass. Tesco will though, in all fairness, will offer over 100 soulless low paid jobs for those who wish to work rotation-shifts on a full 24 hour basis.

Once there here, Tesco will do just what they like as they have done in nearly every other small town they've inhabited. So for those who want Tesco in Romsey - just beware of want you wish for. . . . .

( I am not an employee of Bradbeer employee nor have no connection with them. )

There are just 4 Bradbeers stores in the UK, Tesco has nearly 3,000.
So I am rather annoyed by those who choose to criticise Bradbeers in this "Broadlands' Tesco" debate.

Bradbeers is a quality and traditional department store and we really do NEED stores like this. They are a dying breed. Romsey and New Milton are very lucky to have them and we do not want to loose them.
Tesco on the other hand is just a common supermarket selling goods, sometimes of dubious quality. Its ethic is greed and dominance - no wonder I guess when you consider that its DNA has been inherited from the infamous Dame Shirley Porter (the Tesco heiress).
So Tesco cares nothing for the small companies struggling to make an honest living, nor for those whose livelihoods will be lost if it "moves in".
The world doesn't need yet another Tesco store nor another Tesco-town!. We've had our fill of Tesco.

Should Tesco move into Broadlands it will suck the life out of the town of Romsey and cause havoc on our narrow bypass.
On the positive side Tesco will in all fairness, offer over 100 soulless low paid jobs to those who wish to work rotating-shifts probably on a 24 hour rotating shift basis. And once here Tesco will do what exactly what it wants to do and NO ONE will have the power to stop it, just as it seems to have done in other small towns it has inhabited.
And remember, just because Tesco says it "HAS NO PLANS" to do something (like build a petrol station or stock pharmaceutical goods) does not mean that it WONT do these things.
So for those who want a Tesco in Romsey and on the famous estate - just beware of want you wish for.

Perhaps Kitchener should question why Bradbeers has 4 stores and Tesco the "common supermarket"has 6351 worldwide (2975 in the UK).Setting aside the snobbish comment, could it be the awful truth that people actually like Tesco, otherwise it would have gone out of business years ago.
But Kitchener has missed the point. It has been identified that Romsey needs another mid-price FOOD supermarket.Bradbeer
s does not qualify!!

Tesco will provide more jobs for local paople, more parking for shoppers who can then pop into the town two visit the cafe's and smaller shops. And if the town becomes busier it may attract other high street stores to the Romsey. People need to start speding money in the town, at the moment all we get is old people browsing!

Wow,In your new pics Mr Greg Davies is riding an escalator!!! I didn't realise that such excitement existed in Romsey. But seriously, your headline "one of Romsey's biggest retailers" is open to question. Does Bradbeer's turnover match Boots,Superdrug,W H Smith or even Oxfam???

I look forward to Tesco's opening up a store here, stop with the snobbish comments and wake up, look around at the empty shops, and see what there is at the moment many charity shops, estate agents, coffee shops by the dozen. I see plenty of people browsing in Bradbeers (many are tourists) but not a lot of buying going on, plus they are overstaffed - two sometimes three people behind the till, one to deal with the payment and the other to put it in a bag!!!!

It's called competition. At the moment there is no competition in Romsey which is why everything is so expensive.

Ever heard of proofreading your text before it is posted nory87?

A lot of the 'old ****' as you so eloquently describe the older generation aren't opposed to having a Tesco in the Romsey area per se, just not at Broadlands.
