Pupils from Romsey’s Stroud School have been doing their bit for the environment. They carried out a litter pick at Woodley Recreation Ground and the surrounding area All 27 children involved were members of the school’s new Civic Award project, a junior version of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Teachers and parent volunteers helped with the clean-up. Eastleigh Borough Council donated litter pickers and gloves to the spring clean.

Head teacher, Alastair Dodds, said: “The children worked very hard and afterwards enjoyed a well-earned refreshment break followed by a friendly game of rounders on the newly-tidied recreation ground.

“Civic Award was introduced to Stroud in September, 2013. It encourages children to develop a sense of citizenship and the importance of doing something for other people.

“It is the forerunner to Duke of Edinburgh Award, which pupils can take up when they are 14 years old. The uptake has been phenomenal and is a great reflection on our pupils and dedicated staff.”
