A SOLAR farm covering 80 acres of land could be built on the Broadlands estate.

Energy company Solarcentury want to create the facility which could power almost 5,000 homes.

It is not yet known how many panels the farm will have, but Solarcentury say it will generate 16 megawatts, enough for 4,800 homes in the area.

Solarcentury have not yet submitted a planning application, but this is set to follow after a public consultation.

Broadlands Estates manager, Richard Jordan-Baker confirmed they had been approached by Solarcentury.

He said: “Having been approached by numerous solar companies over the last two years due to our proximity to suitable grid connections and our topology, we are currently in discussions with Solarcentury.

“Having a responsible attitude to, and an interest in, renewable, sustainable energy, the Estate is considering Solarcentury's approach.”

A spokesman for Solarcentury, said: “The site has been carefully chosen for its potential to deliver high levels of solar powered electricity to the local grid.”

Residents will receive letters about the plans within the next three weeks and a public meeting will be held on June 27 at Woodley Village Hall.

Test Valley Borough councillor for Romsey Extra, Ian Hibberd, said: “If the solar farm is in an appropriate area then I think that would be acceptable.”

Solarcentury said more details will be announced in the next few weeks.
