IT was a case of ready 'bed-y' go in Romsey.

Hundreds of people lined the streets as the towns annual bed race saw teams get soaked with water bombs.

However despite a big turn out by an enthusiastic crowd - only five teams took part in the bed race and three in the go kart race due to late pull outs.

The teams included The George's Trust, The Post Office, Bishops Blaize pub and Romsey and Chandlers Ford & District Round Table.

The route saw the teams start at Alma Road Car Park, then make their way down Love Lane, through The Hundred, The Cornmarket, Bell Street, Newton Lane and around Romsey Abbey and back the same way to Alma Road Car Park where they were cheered on by more than 200 people.

In the go kart race the Sunnyside team from the 3rd Romsey Scouts with their Toy Story 3 kart took first place.

While in the traditional bed race, the teams had water bombs hurled at them throughout the race by the fire brigade at the Abbey approach.

The George’s Trust team, dressed as Oompa Loompas raced into first place and didn't let the water bombs put them off and finished in first place for a second year in a row.

In last place Romsey and Chandlers Ford & District Round Table who were dressed in Christmas outfits and used a Santa sleigh managed to get the biggest cheer of the day.

Chairman of Romsey Carnival John Ray was upbeat after the race.

Mr Ray, said: "Hopefully next year the weather will be a bit better, it is always a big event and very well supported.

"We want the same amount of people coming out for the carnival procession, we will do it again next year last year we had more beds but the weather put people off today."

After the race the Romsey Cadets gave a display in the car park and prizes were handed out by Romsey Carnival Queen Naomi Reading and Senior Carnival Queen Lizzie Dutfield.

Romsey Carnival will take place on July 19 with the main procession taking place at 3pm.
