IT’S a charming old-fashioned pub in the heart of a Hampshire market town and it pulls in regulars from miles around.

The Tudor Rose in Romsey’s Cornmarket has a chequered past.

It was once a brothel and it is reputed to be haunted.

Landlady and landlord, Lisa Moore and Barry Harvey, have been in charge of the highly popular watering hole for five years and both are well liked by the regulars - some of whom have been using it for decades.

Daily Echo: Landlady Lisa Moore , with Kayleigh Waterman and Sophie Cleary behind the bar.

Lisa said: “The pub is over 500 years old and apparently it is haunted. People have seen ghosts here, including my partner Barry.

"He’s seen the ghost of a little girl a couple times.

"It was used as a brothel at one time and also a hospital for injured soldiers. We only have one bar which is unique and we specialise in real ale. We have Sharp’s Doom Bar and Courage Best Bitter.”

Daily Echo:

"It may only have one bar, but the pub has the friendly atmosphere that customers love with a warm greeting when you walk through the front door, which opens onto the Cornmarket.

"At the rear of the pub is a courtyard garden where many customers sit out, relax and enjoy a pie and a pint and bread rolls at any time of the year.

"And at this time of year when the sun is out the enclosed courtyard garden is extremely popular with families who socialise with a drink and have a light snack."

Back inside the ancient building is extremely attractive and 'olde worlde' with its timber ceiling and oak beams and it’s like take a trip back to Tudor times.

On a cold winter’s night the very old log fire in the bar is lit.

Daily Echo:

Other interesting uses the pub has had is that of a workhouse and a guildhall.

It took the name Tudor Rose in 1928 after major work on the building revealed how old the pub really was.

It was originally called the Bugle.

Lisa added: “My two daughters and my son help out behind the bar along with Barry’s two daughters. We are a family run pub and people come from a wide area for a drink here.

"We are an old-fashioned pub with traditional values.”

Bar staff include Sophie Cleary and Kayleigh Waterman.

Pub bosses lay on live music on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

The Tudor Rose is open Monday to Thursday between 11am and 11pm, Fridays between 11am and midnight, Saturdays from 10am until midnight and Sundays between midday and 10.30pm.
