HORTICULTURAL enthusiasts enjoyed sunny weather and an array of plans at a festival in Hampshire.

Despite the dry spring and early summer, exhibitors at the 104th Bartley Horticultural Society Annual Show maintained a high standard.

They filled the hall with colourful flowers and mouthwatering fruit and vegetables.

Pauline Durbin scooped all four awards in the Cottagers Section as well as the RHS Banksian Medal.

Also exhibiting were four generations of the Smithson family

They did well in the Handicraft and Homecraft sections.

The show’s spokesman Tim Shaw praised the organisers and urged more gardeners to come forward to join the society.

He said: “To stage such a large show each year requires a huge effort from the committee and an army of helpers who must be applauded for their enthusiasm and energy.

“However, as with many societies it seems, attracting new and younger members is proving difficult.

“As the age profile continues to rise, the future of the show may be in jeopardy.

“Nevertheless, the committee is determined that the ‘Show will go on’.

“We would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the young or young at heart to come and join us and not only enjoy the benefits of gardening but also help keep this historic local event alive.”
