A HAMPSHIRE charity which supports cancer sufferers celebrated its 20th anniversary with a glittering ball.

Posh frocks and DJs were the dress code at the Cromwell Arms Pavilion in Romsey for the event to mark two decades of Jane Scarth House Cancer Support Centre.

In 1995 when Phil Scarth and family worked with Kim Fielder to open Jane Scarth House, named after Phil's wife who had tragically died of cancer a year earlier.

Since then the centre has served Romsey by providing free support to those suffering from or affected by cancer.

Today the centre is managed by Romsey Cancer Support Centre, a new charity set up just a year ago to ensure the work at Jane Scarth House could continue after Wessex Cancer Trust announced that it would close the much-loved facility.

Fund raising chairman Elaine Grainger said: “The people in Romsey have been so supportive over the last year. Things are going well at the centre and we felt it would be appropriate to celebrate 20 years of service.

“We did not plan this as a fund raising event, but again people were so generous. With a raffle and a very successful auction we raised nearly £6,000 to help the centre continue the good work.

“The Pavilion looked good, the food was great and Hot Rabbit had everyone on their feet dancing the whole evening.”

A more “serious celebration” - a service at Romsey Abbey will take place on December 6 at 3pm.
