The celebrations began at Crosfield Hall as the carnival queens lead procession of floats down the streets.
The carnival saw sleighs, fire trucks, donkeys, Snow White and even a Star Wars float march down the streets of Romsey.
Before the lights were switched on there was a minute's silence to remember those killed in the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Mayor Baverstock said: "The carnival and light switch on was really good and the whole event has been brilliant."
Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey and Southampton North said: "It is always brilliant and this year the winter carnival has got bigger and better.
"I think Romsey does Christmas brilliantly and there is a real festive spirit."
Jo Weguelim, 28, attended the carnival with her daughter and said: "I think it is lovely and I like that it brings people together."
