TWO companies have been shortlisted to run Hampshire's main rail operator.

First South Western Trains Ltd and Stagecoach South West Ltd have been named on the shortlist for the South Western franchise.

The two firms will now have to demonstrate why they should operate the route and how they will improve journeys for passengers before one is picked to take over the franchise from next June.

Speaking after the Department for Transport announced the shortlist, rail minister Claire Perry said: "The South Western franchise has some of the busiest routes in the country, serving a diverse range of passengers and places.

"It is vital that we have the best partner to help us meet the challenge of delivering better journeys for all customers using these services.

"We are investing in additional capacity, and have ambitious plans for smart ticketing, customer service and improved connectivity across the South Western network, to give passengers real benefits across the region and beyond."

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes has urged local people to provide feedback to the government about local train services, as the deadline for the consultation on franchise renewal approaches.

Ms Fernandes says the most important issues include capacity on services, facilities on trains, disabled access, parking, and journey times between major destinations.

She said: “Many people have contacted me to give me their views on local rail services since I was elected, raising issues such as capacity, journey times and variable facilities.

“I had a meeting with the rail minister to discuss local services when this consultation began and have provided my own response on behalf of local people, but I would urge anyone with a view on the next franchise to use this opportunity to tell the government what they think before the deadline.”
