SHOPPERS and visitors to Romsey can celebrate the Queen’s birthday on Thursday (April 21) when the town crier makes a proclamation in her honour.

Romsey Town Crier, Terry Hamer, will be standing in the market place announcing the news of the Queen’s official birthday at about 3pm.

Although he had been given permission to stand outside the gates of Buckingham Palace as part of The Loyal Company of Town Criers, due to other commitments he will be standing in Romsey instead.

He will be celebrating 10 years in office as Romsey Town Crier on July 3 when again he opens the Romsey Mayors Picnic in the memorial park at noon.

He said: “After 10 years in office as Romsey Town Crier, I think it’s the greatest honour to be able to give the proclamation on the day.”
