POLICE are warning residents to be vigilant after a woman in Romsey was targeted by a malicious phone caller.

She received a telephone call at her home in Cupernham Lane last week from a man claiming to be calling from the "telephone preference service".

As she had made enquiries about blocking nuisance calls she believed it to be legitimate and continued to talk to the man.

He already had some of her details and asked her to confirm these and give him other information.

However her bank discovered that her card had been cloned and £20 withdrawn from her account on May 19 before another £100 was taken.

The card was stopped and she will be refunded by her bank.

Another address on Cupernham Lane was also targeted but no details were given out.

Police are urging residents to never give out personal details over the phone and to end calls immediately if they are unsure.

Any calls of this nature should be reported to the police on 101 and Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.
