A HOME next to a Romsey secondary school has been shut for one month after neighbours repeatedly complained it is a drugs den.

Magistrates ordered the flat in Hollman Drive be sealed up following a string of complaints about noise, disturbances at the property and drugs.

A string of criminal offences had been taking place at the flat – which lies behind The Romsey School in Greatbridge – for months, according to police.

A force spokesman said the activity at the property had “had a huge impact” on law-abiding people living in the rest of the block and the street.

He added that it was only due to the actions of “brave members of the community” coming forward that the house has been closed down.

Anyone entering the property between now and July 8 will be breaking the law unless they have been authorised by police.

One neighbour, who the Romsey Advertiser is not naming, said: “It’s been horrible. I’ve been signed off sick from work permanently and I might now lose my home because I’ve fallen behind with the rent.

“The first time we contacted police was when we saw blood on the main door and smear marks up the walls. That was in about October.

“I’ve smelt cannabis and if I’m in bed I can hear them arguing about who’s having the next line.

“Last night was the first time I’ve slept right through in about 18 months.”

Sergeant Victoria Dennett said: “The activities of the occupants of this address have had a huge impact on the quality of life for those living nearby and our aim was to stop this.

“We listened to the concerns of residents and worked to ensure they could live their lives without fear of stress and intimidation, as well as protecting vulnerable people within this community.

“Had it not been for the brave members of the community who have come forward and told us what was happening, this order would not have been possible so we would like to thank the residents for their support.

“We hope that this order will send a strong message that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour.”

She added: “This closure order have been a result of successful joint working between local officers, Test Valley Borough Council and Aster Housing Group.”

A spokesman for Hampshire police added: “Drug use and anti-social behaviour has been reported at the address on several occasions since March, causing distress and disturbance to those living nearby.”

It is not known whether anyone living in the property has been re-housed.

Anyone concerned about drug-related crime or anti-social behaviour where they live, can contact Hampshire police on 101.
