A THAI restaurant chain has announced it will move into where a former Romsey town centre business closed down last month.

Fifteen new jobs will be created after Koh Thai Tapas has revealed that it is to open in place of where Bertie’s had been for more than 20 years.

Romsey will become the group’s third location in Hampshire – its 11th in total, when it opens in mid July after a four week refurbishment.

The announcement comes within weeks of the acquisition of a site in Winchester and a 12th site is expected open later in the year.

Andrew Lennox, chief executive of Koh Thai Tapas said that Romsey would be perfect for its brand.

“We have long been interested in Romsey – it’s a fantastic addition to the Koh Thai Tapas brand - the town’s demographics and geographic location make it an ideal setting for us,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing some familiar faces who have been fans of our Ringwood and Salisbury branches and to becoming a part of the community in Romsey.”

Bertie closed down after owner David Birmingham said he would be retiring after being “in the front line” of the business which he set up to provide modern British cuisine in The Hundred.

A focal point for many clubs and societies in the town, including the fund-raising 41 Club, David previously thanked the community for their support.

The new restaurant will house 80 diners and the company has already begun recruiting for front of house and bar positions.

The popular concept has become known for its vibrant hand painted murals, ornate fretwork and the prominent wooden clad bars.

Departing owners David and Christine Birmingham said: "We would like to wish Andy and his team at Koh Thai best wishes for the future and hope that all goes well."

Kevin Marsh from Savills acted on the deal.
