A WOMAN is under police guard in hospital after an alleged frenzied knife attack in a quiet Hampshire street.

The 45-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after terrified neighbours dialled 999 late on Sunday.

Residents described how they saw the victim staggering around in the road in a blood-soaked T-shirt.

Last night police said two 45-year-old women had been taken to Southampton General Hospital with stab wounds.

A spokesman said the injuries sustained by both women were not life-threatening but one of them was under police guard.

Officers had been called to reports of a fight in Withers Road, Romsey, at 11.05pm on Sunday.

A neighbour who lives opposite the victim told the Daily Echo how she had gone to the bathroom at around 11pm and heard noises outside.

She said: “I looked through the crack in the front room curtain and I saw her. She had been stabbed and she was bent over staggering around.

“Her girlfriend was stood in the doorway with her little girl who was crying.

“I went back into the bedroom and my boyfriend immediately saw her blood-soaked t-shirt and realised she’d been hit or stabbed. She was on her knees in her agony.”

The neighbour, who did not want to be named, reported seeing the arrested woman looking “visibly distressed and shaken”.

Other neighbours told how the arrested woman had been causing aggravation to other residents in the street since she moved there around two years ago.

One said residents had made “numerous complaints” to housing association Sovereign and the police about her “very intimidating” behaviour, which the resident said included damaging cars in the street.

David Allen, 56, a market trader who lives in Withers Road, said: “There’s drinking, shouting and screaming every time of the day. She makes obscene gestures to people in the street. Enough is enough now. She’s fallen out with every single resident. Everyone else is so friendly and helpful.”

Chris Drake, 36, a painter and decorator, who also lives in Withers Road, said: “Always when she’s drinking there’s a problem. We don’t want her back here.”

A spokesman for Sovereign said: “We’re aware of an incident yesterday evening between two of our residents and we’re supporting the police with their inquiries as part of an ongoing investigation.”

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service added: “At 11.06pm we sent two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle to Romsey and two patients were taken to Southampton General Hospital.”

Anyone with information about the incident can contact police on 101.
