The Children In Need live Appeal Show raised a record total of nearly £47 million in a night of tributes to the late Sir Terry Wogan.

Presenter Rochelle Humes said Sir Terry would have been ''proud'' of the ''absolutely incredible'' amount raised on the first appeal night since his death.

The veteran broadcaster hosted the annual BBC event for 35 years until 2015 when poor health forced him to pull out. He passed away in January after a battle with cancer.

Yesterday's appeal raised £46,624,259 - a rise from last year's total of £37.1 million.

The challenges that are taken on will help BBC Children in Need to fund 12 projects in Southampton.

Already this week, fundraising events have been taking place in Hampshire and up and down the country - and more are expected to take place later today.

Courageous careworker Julia Puia endured a baked bean bath for Children in Need, raising more than £300.

She was covered in 100 cans of baked beans by residents, relatives, staff and volunteers in the hour-long chilly challenge at Colten Care’s Lymington home, Court Lodge.

Hartbeeps, which runs musical baby, toddler and pre-school classes in Highfield, Bitterne and Woolston, started its Children in Need-themed sessions this week.

This included a raffle at 50p a square and teachers wearing Pudsey onesies to entertain their classes.

They also raised money by coming to class dressed in their favourite pyjamas, before making a popcorn-filled midnight feast.

The group has raised £30 so far from three sessions, and hopes to raise over £100 by the end of the week.

The children at St Swithun's Junior School and Wildground Junior School were lucky enough to be paid a visit by the real-life Pudsey Bear.

The children brought in donations for Children in Need and wore their very own spotty accessories and Pudsey ears to tie in with ‘The Big Spotacular’ theme.

At Cineworld Southampton, Ocean Village, staff have been wearing their Pudsey ears with pride all week, while selling pairs to customers along with their cinema tickets.

Sports team captains at University of Southampton also took part in Gunge a Captain for Children in Need, organised by Southampton RAG (Raise and Give).

For a minimum donation of 50p, sports teams were able to cover their captains in a plate of beans, custard, mushy peas or rice pudding.

The annual 2016 Children in Need appeal show will air tonight live on BBC One at 7.30pm.
