JOIN King John’s House Museum and Romsey Abbey for a day of Saxon shenanigans to suit all ages.

From 10.30am until 3.30pm today, young explorers can take part in mini digs, facial reconstructions and find out about Saxons.

Explore weapons and jewellery, and learn how to weave a Saxon braid, then warm your hands – as the Saxons would have done – around a fire. The museum is also hosting a new temporary exhibition exploring the detailed work of Romsey Local History Society piecing together the Saxon story of our town.

In the Abbey, unearth the church's Saxon secrets (including the country's only Saxon scalp) by following a trail sheet that will take you back through 1,000 years of history. At 11am and 1pm Romsey’s Saxon story comes to life in the church with smelly storytelling – find out what a Saxon town really smelt like.

Entrance to the museum costs just £9 per family and includes free return for a whole year.

Activities in the museum start at 10.30am and finish and 3.30pm. Entrance to the church is free, the Saxon trail sheets will be available all day and smelly storytelling takes place at 11am and 1pm.

The day is supported by local firm Trench 1 Archaeology.
