SIR – We seem to have reached a very sorry situation. Many people are rightly alarmed about the impending alterations to our Market Place and those concerns are explicitly expressed by the 'think again' appeal.

I wish to suggest that the populace of Romsey be given the opportunity to try out the suggested plan before any firm action is taken.

This may easily be achieved by using barriers, sandbags or whatever to mark out the suggested new zone and let the pedestrians, traffic and businesses, give it a go.

Do this over a three-month period after Bell Street is opened. Then simply assess the feasibility on a practical and fair basis.

Come on councillors, stop throwing brickbats at anybody who opposes you and act for the best for all. Let common sense have a say.

We are all both pedestrians and motorists. There is no 'pro-car' brigade or faction.

As it is, no proper consultation took place as the option to retain a roundabout and increase pavement widths was not given. No proper risk assessment has been made, only an out-of-date report and now our councillors have painted themselves into a corner.

I am sure that the citizens of Romsey would appreciate this consideration to give it a try.

L DUPONT,

Romsey
