RUNNERS are gearing up for a record-breaking Romsey Relay Marathon next month.

For the third year running, Barratt Homes has been confirmed as the sponsor for the event, organised by The Rotary Club of Romsey.

One hundred and thirty teams have signed up for the annual charity event, 36 more than last year, which has raised more than £170,000 for good causes since its inception back in 2013.

Taking place at Broadlands Estate, the record-breaker will be held on May 13.

Event organiser Charlie Daniel-Hobbs said: "The Rotary Club of Romsey is delighted to be working with Barratt Homes again this year. Last year was by far the most successful event to date: £100,000 was raised for good causes, many of them serving the Romsey area.

"The atmosphere was superb as over 900 competitors were cheered on by more than 2,500 spectators.

"The Relay Marathon is not only a race, but a major fundraising opportunity, a sound team building exercise and a family day out in a beautiful setting.

"Most importantly, it brings the whole community together to not only raise funds, but also awareness of various charities serving Hampshire."

The event sees up to teams of up to ten members take it in turn to run two laps of a 1.3-mile course before passing the baton to the next team member. The oldest competitor to date has been aged over 80 and the youngest was 8, as the event aims to cater for both able bodied runners, and those with disabilities.

Michelle Storer, of Barratt Homes, said: "Without doubt the marathon has captured the imagination of the community.

"This year's record breaking entry speaks for itself and we're delighted to once again sponsor this brilliant event.

"The event offers a perfect opportunity for residents, businesses and community groups to come together and do something fantastic for charity while keeping fit.

"Our Barratt Homes team has been training hard and we want as many people as possible to pull on their trainers and join us."
