PREVIOUS Test Valley Mayor cllr Carl Borg-Neal joined Lockerley and Wellow Primary Schools last week during his mayorship to see how they used the Golden Mile to ensure pupils get active.

The initiative aims to inspire youngsters to walk, skip or jog around a measured track within the safety of school grounds to keep fit and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The schools were chosen as they were the first from Test Valley to sign up to the Golden Mile.

Cllr Borg-Neal said: “I love the Golden Mile, it gets kids out and about in the fresh air, doing some activity for around ten minutes a day.

“It’s do beneficial for health, physically and mentally.”

Leader for PE and sport at Wellow Primary School, Laura Lea, said: “The Golden Mile is embedded in our school routine. Since starting it, we have noticed an improvement in the fitness, wellbeing and concentration of our children.”

PE coordinator at Lockerley Primary, Ruth Appleby-Smith, said: “The children have improved levels of stamina through exercising every single day. It gives teachers a moment of fresh air too.”
