ALMOST £1,000 has been raised for Romsey foodbank after the Big Gig concert in May.

Originally supposed to take place in March but for the snowfall, the concert raised a total of £982 for the town's foodbank as crowds descended on Mountbatten School's Lantern Theatre to hear music, comedy and poetry readings.

Members of the Romsey and Southampton North Labour Party visited the foodbank to hand over the cheque.

Philip Griffiths, chair of the labour party, said: "The event was a huge success and a personal triumph for our overall organiser, Mike Dukes.

"We had a really enjoyable evening. There was a real fun and feel-good feeling because we were raising money for people who really needed our help."

Jo Topley, co-ordinator of the Romsey Foodbank, added: "We are very grateful for the support given and funds raised from the Big Gig event. The money raised will go towards running the foodbank here in Romsey, which last year supported more than 1,000 local people."

The gig saw a number of bands take to the stage, with crowds enjoying the entertainment on offer on May 4. It was dubbed as 'plan b', after the snow in March stopped the original concert from taking place.
