A WARNING has been issued after dangerous levels of blue algae was found in Testwood Lakes.
The algae is natural, but can produce a neurotoxin that is dangerous to pets and small children.
The warning comes as Hampshire continues to bask in a heatwave that is drawing many visitors – and their pets – to the water.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said the high levels pose a serious health risk.
Either inhalation or ingestion can have serious consequences.
The trust said: “Please be aware that there are extremely high levels of blue-green algae in the water at Testwood Lakes nature reserve at the moment. Please do not swim in the water.
“The high levels pose a serious health risk through both ingestion and inhalation.”
Blue green algae blooms may appear as green or green and brown scum on the surface of the water. Dogs can swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river or pond, or while licking their fur after going for a swim.
Tips include looking out for warning signs near bodies of water.
