MORE than 40 members of Romsey Youth Choir set off on a tour of Netherlands and Belgium at the end of July, visiting Ypres and taking part in the Menin Gate ceremony.

Victoria Burbidge pointed out each of the five Romsey men’s names on the gate, which has more than 54,000 names of men who died in World War One, but have no named grave.

Members of the choir laid wreathes from the mayor of Romsey, Dorothy Baverstock, and the town council, the Romsey Memorial Association and Romsey Youth Choir.

The choir director, Marion Maxey, said: “It is always great being away with Romsey Youth Choir but the experiences we have had on this trip have been particularly special – I am very proud of them all in so many ways, they are a huge credit to themselves and to Romsey.”

As well as the ceremony, choir members also visited Anne Frank’s house and other poignant destinations across Amsterdam and the Netherlands.
