OUTGOING Eastleigh College student governor, George Arthur, has taken second place in the National Student Governor of the Year Award 2008.

George, who studied art and design, took on this role during all three years of his course; and was shortlisted along with four other applicants from around the country.

George was nominated by Phil Stone, clerk to the board, who named him as an outstanding Student Governor', for his unrivalled commitment to representing learners at the college.

George's achievement is extra rewarding considering he has had to overcome personal obstacles to succeed as governor and attend every board meeting; and make time to represent the art and design course as student rep. He has been commended for his ability to bring humour, enthusiasm and commitment to the board, as well as the capacity to intervene on behalf of other college learners in a well thought out fashion where necessary.

George said: "I haven't really missed a meeting and I found the work as a governor really rewarding and interesting I've seen the college come through all the building stages. All these came to governors for approval and it was really good to be part of that planning."

The award was part of the Centre for Excellence in Leadership National Awards, which took place on July 3 at the Kensington Roof Gardens in London.
