I am writing to endorse Brandon Taylor's excellent suggestion in last week's Letters page (Chronicle, April 4) that the Cathedral authorities should move away from the profoundly lacklustre 'Hollywood' design for the Austen statue in the Close and adopt instead Robert Truscott's much more authentic, serious and meaningful design.
Amongst its many strengths is, as Mr Taylor points out, that it shows Jane Austen doing what she became famous for - actually writing.
This celebrates her intensity of creative purpose with, it seems, the whole body driving the pen. Brilliant!
Please, Cathedral, think again.
