In your columns on March 21, I read that the county council has received around £400,000 from government to improve and enhance and encourage bus travel in Hampshire.

It is a great pity that Winchester City Council is so retrograde when considering use of buses.

Our city residents have lived with an eyesore of a bus station for decades: how could the neglected and rundown bus station encourage bus travel?

What is more, the Lib Dems propose to have no bus station at all! This makes no sense to all citizens and rate payers who rely regularly on our bus service: the elderly who may no longer drive, young mothers with small children, school children and sixth form students.

Among this list there is vulnerability and the need for safety for women and girls especially after dark.

How can the absence of a bus station and its facilities be a positive step if we are to value the safety of vulnerable members of our society?

If we choose not to drive, how do the city council members encourage bus use? Clearly they do not.
