EASTLEIGH’S day of free parking in the build-up to Christmas has been hailed as a huge success and a welcome boost for traders.

The town was buzzing last Saturday as shoppers took advantage of the festive freebie.

There was no charge for using any of the central car parks so it meant a considerable saving for those driving into town and it pulled in shoppers who would otherwise have gone elsewhere.

The borough council was able to offer the day of free parking as a result of the reduction in VAT brought in earlier this year.

Council leader, Keith House, said: “It is vital that we continue to do all we can to ensure the economic prosperity of the town, its traders, residents and visitors. Free parking on one of the town’s busiest shopping days was certainly be a great boost for the town.”
