Plantsman Alan’s golden celebration

HE has been in the business of plant growing for a Hampshire firm for the last 50 years.

So it was only fitting that long-term Hillier Nurseries plantsman Alan Postill should celebrate the milestone by breeding another new plant.

Mr Postill has come up with his new golden form of the Mexican orange blossom called Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’, an evergreen shrub, to be launched at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show in May.

The plant is designed to be resistant to winter weather damage and produces white flowers in sping or early summer and autumn.

Mr Postill wanted to create a strong-growing, golden foliage form of the Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, which Hillier Nurseries, in Ampfield, introduced 30 years ago in 1982 and has since become a popular garden shrub.

The propagator, who produced the Daphne bholua ‘Jaqueline Postill’, therefore used the Aztec Pearl as one of the parent plants for the new type.

The Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’ is available in Hillier Nurseries from this year.
