AN occupant was taken to hospital for treatment after a fire damaged a flat in Andover.

Firefighters were called to deal with the blaze in a first floor flat at Charles Dalton Court in Western Road.

They discovered it was filled with plumes of smoke and an elderly woman was given oxygen treatment at the scene by firefighters.

The blaze caused severe damage to the kitchen said a spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, while the rest of the flat had ‘smoke’ damage.

Two firefighting crews from Andover Fire Station and one from Whitchurch Fire Station tackled the blaze with two breathing apparatus, a jet and hose reel and a pressure ventilator to clear the smoke from the building.

They were called to the blaze at 4.48pm and the stop call was at 5.49pm on July 17.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue say that the fire was caused by either cooking or an electrical fault, and it is not under investigation.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester for treatment.

She was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
