ON WEDNESDAY north west Hampshire experienced its coldest mid August night since records began in 1966.
Met Office weather recorder Trevor Wheeler who has been taking the temperature of the weather for almost 50 years in Hurstbourne Tarrant says the temperature was just 1 degree Celsius (34 degrees F) at dawn.
Trevor said: “The last time such a low August figure occurred was on the 31 August during 1978, when the thermometer registered an exact reading to that of this morning’s.
“Since 1966, when the records began here at Hurstbourne Tarrant, there has been no lower August reading than this figure.
“In exposed low lying areas, there must have been a grass frost this morning.”
