A DOG walk turned into drama at Anton Lakes when a pet got stuck in the water.

Jimmy McMenamin and Kenneth Burman were walking their black Labrador bulldog, Paddy, by one of the lakes when he jumped in but soon got into trouble.

Kenneth, 58, said: “He loves the water, and often goes for a swim.

He swam out to a little island but then he didn’t seem to be going anywhere, which was unusual for him.

“Jimmy tried wading out, but then the water depth suddenly increased drastically and he’s not a good swimmer.”

Jimmy, also 58, said: “I thought I could walk out there because there were no depth markers.

Suddenly the bottom fell away and it got a lot deeper, I can’t swim so I panicked.”

Without thinking, strong swimmer Kenneth jumped in the water fully clothed, with his phone and camera still on his belt, to rescue Paddy.

Kenneth added: “When I got to him I found he had a bit of fishing wire hanging from the branches around his neck stopping him from going anywhere.

“This is supposed to be a nature reserve so I contacted Test Valley Borough Council as other animals could get stuck.”

A spokesperson from TVBC said: “We hope that the two men and dog are okay following the incident at Anton Lakes.

“One of the gentlemen involved in the incident contacted us to report the fishing wire in the lake and we went out and cleared this as a priority.

“The depth of the lake changes dramatically between one metre and five metres. We don’t intend to install depth markers in the water because this could encourage people to enter the lake, which would contradict the ‘no swimming’ signs located around the banks. We will continue to monitor the lake as part of our ongoing maintenance schedule.”
