ANDOVER BMX Club has suffered another “heartbreaking” burglary – just seven months after thieves broke in and stole £7,000 worth of equipment.

The club was broken into again last week when a group of burglars cut a hole in their storage container and removed several expensive pieces of equipment.

The group, who say they have lost more than £3,500 worth of kit this time, have only recently recovered from the last burglary back in December 2014 when thieves made off with 11 top of the range BMX bikes.

Since then the volunteer organisers have devoted both time and money to ramp up security with fences, new locks and more containers – but this has not the deterred thieves.

Devastated organisers now fear they will not be able to renew their insurance policy and say they may have to fold if this is the case.

Talking about the burglary, owner of the group Willie Plowman said: “It’s heartbreaking.

“We do this for the kids and we have put so much into this club and into the security since the last break in and now this happens.

“We managed to get our insurance to pay out last time and they might again this time but when it comes up for renewal they may say we are too much of a risk. If they do then we may end up folding and then who will look after the track for the community?”

Mr Plowman is hoping to get the support of local businesses in the future and says the club needs more backing.

He added: “We need help from the community because we maintain the track not just for us but for everyone in Andover to use as a facility.

“We are going to ramp up security again.”

Those interested in helping the club can contact them through their Facebook page: Andover BMX Raceway or through the Andover Advertiser.
