AN 'Irresponsible act' has resulted in a sheep being put down after it was attacked by a dog.

The incident occurred on Wednesday 22 July on Stockbridge Down when the sheep was attacked resulting in severe injuries to its legs and neck.

As a consequence the sheep had to be put down.

The sheep-grazed slope of the down is fenced separately to the main down, and people are asked to keep their dogs under close control when on this part of the site.

A spokesperson from the National Trust said: "This flock is looked after by both the National Trust and community volunteer lookers, so such an irresponsible act has been felt throughout the community and the people who care about the common land of Stockbridge Down."

Police have been informed.

If anyone has any information they feel could help with enquiries, call 101 quoting the crime reference number 44150253191.

Dog worrying of livestock is a criminal offence and the owner can be prosecuted under the Protection of Livestock Act, 1953.
