THE Mayor of Test Valley has spoken about the desperate shortage of volunteers for local charities and community groups in the borough.

Test Valley recently hosted two community services events in Andover and Romsey which coincided with National Volunteer Week, and the mayor Cllr Karen Hamilton visited a number of stall holders to learn more about the needs of each community group.

“Volunteers are the life and blood line for all community groups, and they are all having a shortage of them,” she said.

“What has caused a problem is where women used to retire at 60 they used to have a fluctuation where people could come forward.

“Now they retire at 66 there’s a gap where all those people who were once able to do it can’t because they are looking after grandchildren because their children are working.

“The numbers are dropping dramatically and the community groups are really struggling.

“Most are providing a vital service through the borough.”
