A TEENAGER hit by a motorhome vehicle while trying to cross the A303 in the dark had spent the day drinking and socialising, a coroner has been told.

Harry Butler, from Walled Meadow, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision after being struck on the A303 westbound, near Andover, just before 9pm on Friday, September 16.

After a day of meeting up with various friends and drinking, the 18-year-old, along with a couple of other friends, attempted to cross the dual carriageway to reach friends on the other side.

Winchester Coroner's Court heard today how Mr Butler's had 162mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood - twice the drink drive limit.

One friend made it to the other side unharmed, while the other, who was also struck, suffered ‘serious life changing injuries’ and still remains in hospital.

Winchester Coroner’s Court heard how the driver of the white Fiat Ducato motorhome could not have been expected to see the three figures due to a lack of road lighting and their dark clothing.

After hearing the evidence, senior coroner Grahame Short concluded Mr Butler died of multiple injuries, adding: “I’m going to record that Harry died due to severe multiple injuries having been struck by a motor vehicle as he ran across the westbound carriageway of the A303 road.

“He died as a result of a road traffic collision, I think it’s the best way to describe it.”
