HOSPITAL trusts in Hampshire have made more than £4 million from parking charges in a year.

The figures, which were revealed in a Freedom of Information request from the Press Association, revealed that across the country more than £120 million has been made from parking.

There were no reported figures for Hampshire Hospitals Trust which runs Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Andover War Memorial Hospital and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

However a spokeswoman for the trust said: “I know that we on the whole are in the lower charges and all the money we get is invested in the car parks themselves, for instance at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital we are doing a lot of work there that is paid for by the charges.

“Our parking for staff is also free which is really important to us. Also if you are visiting our hospitals regularly you can pay for a £10 weekly ticket.”

University Hospital Southampton made £3,336,770, of which £1,015,081 was from staff.

The amount of money raised at the the hospital was down slightly on 2015’s figure of £3,876,314.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust made £646,638 from staff parking with other income going to a private firm under a PFI agreement.

The overall figures are up five per cent on the year before.
