MP Kit Malthouse is locked in the Houses of Commons following a shooting incident outside the Houses of Parliament this afternoon.

A spokesperson for the North West Hampshire MP confirmed Mr Malthouse is being kept in the House of Commons chamber, alongside fellow MPs, following the incident at 2.30pm today.

It is reported that a knife-wielding attacker was shot by armed police in the grounds of Parliament after pedestrians were mowed down on Westminster Bridge.

More than 10 people are said to have been hit by a car which reportedly drove into pedestrians and cyclists.

The intruder then managed to break into the grounds of the Houses of Parliament and stabbed a police officer.

He was then shot, according to reports.

A spokesperson said Mr Malthouse, along with police, advised his staff to stay in their office.

He confirmed that Mr Malthouse and his team are all safe and well.

The spokesperson said: "We can hear helicopters and lots of police shouting, I think I heard shots.

"We're safe and just waiting for more news and instructions.

"People seem calm."

Mr Malthouse tweeted soon afterwards confirming he and the rest of his team are safe.

It was later reported one woman has died and a number of others have been hurt - including some with "catastrophic" injuries - in the incident on Westminster Bridge, a junior doctor at St Thomas' Hospital has said.
